Of the many meetings of AA & NA I’ve been to I’ve never heard testimony to salvation thru Jesus Christ. That’s why people stay sick in their minds & bodies no matter how long they have sober because they perpetuate sickness. Jesus Christ heals & the 12 step cult leaders/members don’t understand that & fail to accept the truth. ALTHOUGH SUBSTANCE ABUSE IS A DISEASE & CAN STILL BE OVERCOME WITH 12 STEP PROGRAMS. 10 Tips For Maintaining Psychological Health:

1. Accept Yourself- A lot of psychology & self-help books tell us to “love ourselves.” It’s not a bad idea. Severe dislike for oneself is often associated with extreme guilt, shame, & depression. Don’t underestimate the power of believing in your abilities & valuing your uniqueness.

Too often, people lead inauthentic lives that are defined by others as they strive for acceptance. Self-acceptance is a crucial ingredient for motivation & positive emotion, & accepting yourself even leads to more acceptance by others. Accepting yourself is not the same as thinking you are perfect.

2. Strive for Self Determination- When I feel like the captain of my own ship I’m more interested in life, more excited about life, & more confident. My motivations are a complex mix of the things I truly want for myself & things I’ve adopted from significant others over the years.

Feeling as if I have some control over the decisions that affect me is crucial to psychological health. When I’m in controlling, punitive, or dominating environments, my sense of importance & freedom suffers.

Sometimes you need to adapt to the desires & values of others. In these situations, you can still retain a sense of self-determination if you agree even slightly with what you’re adapting to. What if you want to paint your house bright purple, but the city won’t let you? Well, if the officials can agree to lavender, then you probably don’t feel so pushed around. It’s rarely (if ever) a good thing for people to feel like they’re being told what to do when they don’t agree with the directive.

3. Stay Connected & Nurture Relationships- Sometimes it seems like modern lives are lonely. Everyone speeds around in their cars or stares into computer screens all day, isolated from other people & busy with the details of their own lives. I’ve often felt like I have to sacrifice productivity at work in order to socialize. I hear people make similar comments all the time, “I just don’t have time for friends & family.” Here’s a tip: Make time!

In these times of mega-cities & super-suburbs, it can be hard to stay close to friends & family. The age of the small town filled with extended family is all but gone. Small towns are out there, but most people don’t live in them. Despite these conditions, there is a benefit in working to maintain closer proximity to people who matter. The huge growth in mobile phone, internet, & social media use may reflect both the desire to stay connected & an attempt to do so in a fragmented & fast paced world.

Having friends & family around is nice, but it’s only a good thing if the relationships are good. Some people can’t wait to get as far away from certain people as possible. Feeling emotionally connected & supported by your relationships is just as important, if not more important, than simple proximity. People need intimate relationships that they can count on when times are hard. They need trustworthy romantic partners who value the same things.

Here are some other helpful hints for maintaining good relationships: Practice forgiveness, be tolerant, communicate honesty, express yourself, balance independence with dependence, & actual responsibly toward others- & nurture their values, desires, feelings, & wishes.

4. Lend A Helping Hand- When you reach out to others in need, you often get a sense of mastery over your own circumstances, & you’re working to foster positive social conditions. Lending a helping hand helps the intended beneficiaries, & it also helps the individuals who offer the assistance. I won’t mention that there’s a nice tax break in it too. Win, win, win.

5. Find Meaning & Purpose & Work Toward Goals- Feeling like life is meaningless is a hallmark of depression. One of the drawbacks of modern society is the sense of alienation that can come from working day in & day out with only the next workday or the next paycheck as a reward.

It’s crucial to have meaningful personal goals. Research consistently finds that the prices of working toward goals is as important as the goals themselves. At times gains can be too lofty & people can set themselves up for disappointment because they can’t reach them. This defeats the purpose of setting goals in the first place. Realistic & meaningful goals are helpful. Having goals is not the same as being perfectionistic. Perfectionists set themselves up to fail because no one is perfect. Being a little kind to yourself & understanding you’re going to make mistakes in life is part of accepting ourself & it’s good for your psychological health.

6. Find Hope & Maintain Faith- Research has consistently shown that having a deep sense of spiritual faith can be a protective measure for dealing with loss, illness, & psychological disorders. When things seem dark, it really helps to have a sense of hope & optimism about the future & a belief that goals can eventually be achieved.

Having a positivity bias helps to override fear & maintain motivation. Being biased in this way is kind of like seeing the world through rose colored glasses. Pessimists may claim that they’re more in touch with reality, but a little positive illusion never hurts.

7. Find Flow & Be Engaged- Professional athletes talk about “being in the groove” when they’ve had a good game. Flow is the experience of feeling totally engaged, involved, engrossed, & focused in an activity or experience. Living a happy life is a matter of learning to maximize & control inner experiences in order to feel harmoniously engaged in the activity for its own sake.

8. Enjoy the Beautiful Things in Life- The ability to appreciate beauty is aesthetics. There’s a lot of negativity & ugliness in the world- wars, disease, violence, & degradation are all around. Depressing, right? Being able to appreciate the beautiful things is a saving grace in a world that’s so often unattractive.

The experience of beauty is personal & one that no one else can define for another person. You may see the beauty in a famous painting or the sun shine through the clouds. When I see a well-executed play in football, it brings tears to my eyes. “That’s beautiful, man!” Sniff, sniff.

Even things that are imperfect & complete can be beautiful, particularly if you are a practitioner of the “wabi-sari” worldview derived from Buddhism. Finally, an excuse not to clean the house.

9. Struggle to Overcome; Learn To Let Go- Challenge & adversity are undeniable facts of life. Being able to effectively cope with challenges is crucial to maintaining psychological & even physical well-being. Each person has variety of skills & techniques used to cope with stress & adversity. Here’s the best general advice for coping with control over, & to cope passively within situations that you don’t have control over.

Active coping involves taking actions to improve a situation such as looking for a job when you’re fired instead of just saying, “Oh well, I guess I just wasn’t meant to have a job.” In situations that you can control, such as many health-related problems, taking action consistently leads to better outcomes & better psychological functioning.

Passive coping involves processes of psychological & emotional acceptance. When a person you love dies, you may run yourself ragged trying to shake or diminish the feelings of loss & sadness. But eventually, you have to accept the reality of the situation. Accepting reality when you cannot change it is a good example of passive coping. Forgiveness is another one.

10. Don’t Be Afraid To Change- Morihei Ueshiba, founder of the martial art aikido, wrote a book called The Art of Peace. His secret to living a peaceful life was the core principle of Judo: Go with the flow! When you are rigid & inflexible, you are more likely to experience resistance & strain yourself in trying to maintain your posture. When you are flexible & willing to change a behavior that is not working, you're more adaptable & better adjusted. It takes courage to change your ways, but it is vital for health & well- being.

WE make a searching & fearless personal inventory of OUR life (by print & mentally in 5 year increments from childhood on: Relationships- Romantic, Family, & Friends [use memory & any other resources]; Jobs- Cover Letter, Work History & Resume (separate files,) & Advice; Consequences & Peril (*see Step 7;) Education- Attendance, Grades, Honors & Self Learning.

6. WE admit to OURSELF & God- Jesus Christ (Lord and Savior of all creation)- the exact nature of OUR wrongs/sins. Christian confession is between OURSELF & God only!

7. WE become ready to have OUR defects of character & shortcomings removed.

10. WE make direct (preferably) or indirect apologies &/or restitution to those good people WE hurt at the right time(s). The taking OUR time in making amends shows merit in repaying debts monetarily or otherwise & relieves the pressure of having to make amends immediately & with some people it's better to not make amends to them than making amends to them. If WE make contact with someone on OUR 9th Step List by accident WE try to make amends then if practical. If an apology &/or restitution is urgent WE make the amends right away. But WE don’t add insult to injury if further harm &/or offense to OURSELF, them or others will come. (*See 4th, 9th, & Step Lists.)

1OTH STEP; (GOOD TIMES, FROM 4TH STEP LIST, & MENTAL NOTES OF ADMISSIONS OF WRONGDOINGS):

the following helps me overcome painful memories because I was a marijuana user (& I've used other drugs also & experienced trauma not related to alcoholism/drug addiction) & liquor drinker from early childhood until I was 49 years old. although I had some sobriety stints when I was younger it didn't take because I didn't have a program like I do now which is noted below and above (*see The Table of Contents) nor did I make a  commitment to live life sober long term. life is one day at a time, but I know it's important to commit to a longterm of sobriety as well.

i go over the good memories I have divided into fourths (which is 360 written out below; so 90 each morning at first, then less often as the memories became ingrained in my memory- although there are more that come to mind since I took the time to list the 360.) this gives me a positive view on my past despite my drinking, using, & PTSD. it also gives me perspective on how i can & will live my life sober in the future.

1. Swimming in the pond in the bay area w/ step-family & dad.

2. Eating tomato rice soup in my high chair watching Electric Company, Sesame Street, & Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood.

3. Playing w/ my siamese cat; going to radio station w/ dad.

4. My dad’s & step mom’s wedding; going to studio w/ dad.

5. Driving in the care w/ my step family listening to the radio.

7. Driving w/ my dad in his VW van from San Fransisco to Los Angeles & in & around San Fransisco.

8. Hanging out in the park w/ the merry go round w/ my dad; going camping w/ dad & ally at Mt. Shasta.

9. Going to Toys R Us w/ step-mom & riding the mechanical horse outside.

28. Had a club house in the storage compartment in parking spaces; played Spin the Bottle & Truth or Dare w/ Erica; Mom would bring chocolate chip browny cookies.

29. Got into Bonnie & Miss Ellis; watched after school specials.

30. Celebrated Bi-centennial w/ 2nd grade classmates; admired black girl.

31. Got into fight w/ Victor- was climbing tree, but we became friends.

32. Went to old amusement part at Beverly / LaCieniga & watched the ponies & views boat from Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.

43. Went to movies w/ Summers brothers at Fairfax Theatre, saw 40,000 Leagues Under the Sea; walked to Griffith Park & back w/ the guys.

44. Mom’s Pinto then the LeCar; Golden Bird Chicken.

45. Watching Willie & Dusty plays basketball, but I was good too.

46. Going to Lake Castaic w/ Terry (Terrance) & other friends.

47. Skateboarding on my block w/ Shane & Terrance.

48. Playing boat races in the rain gutters; saw Star Wars at The Groman’s Chinese Theatre w/ dad.

49. Making out w/ Chiquita; had ginger beer & suicides w/ burgers from All American Burger w/ dad.

50. Going to Crenshaw mall area w/ Chiquita.

51. Going body boarding w/ mom & little league baseball friends & eating mom’s sandwiches & chocolate chip cookies.

52. Catching big waves on my body board.

53. Helping friend swim to shore when we were caught in a riptide.

55. 5th grade birthday party at Baldwin Park even though Bobby ruined it.

56. Fell in love w/ Anna & hung out w/ Jason & had the Gleason brothers throw rocks at our bus, acting up on bus & was put in the front for teasing Jewish kid w/ Jason; listening to The Beatles records.

57. Did an artful astronomy project even though Keith ruined it; became friends w/ him; had a black teacher in 5th grade; wore gold chains w/ trinkets; had fun square dancing; playing sockball & tetherball. 

58. Playing AYSO soccer & making new friends- Rami included.

62. Went to 7ty grade & soon after smoked pot w/ Rick, Dana, & Steven in overnight at Steve’s house & then it soon after became a habit. A lot of us kids got addicted to pot, but it was fun.

63. Had a good time eating clams w/ tabasco sauce & drinking beer & smoking weed at Steve’s house w/ his dad & mom & brothers & Dana & some other kids from 3 houses down. Became good friends w/ Steve & Dana & a lot of kids from Bancroft Jr. High even though I stopped having out w/ the good kids like the Irvins, Gabrielle, Audra, Jasmine, Shane, & Rick; started meeting classmates at catering truck in the alley up the block from campus; fell for a few girls & dated them, but lost my virginity to Cathy, but lost touch the same year; fell in love w/ Toni, but was also in love w/ Lisa & Vanessa; met Louie through Rick.
